All of you have good points. I see the sense in balance, rather than exclusion. I'll be watching Purple Hearts, Jessica, for your possible post on this subject. Thanks everyone for dropping by.

Thank you for coming to visit us at the Purple Hearts! We appreciate your stopping by. This post on 'Writers write' is very timely as we had a similar discussion last week. The writing has to get done! But all this added stuff - the resources, the reading, the research, the learning - is so important, too. I share in your rant though as I also strive to find a better balance between writing and reading - the two things I love most! Maybe one of my next posts will be on time and (web) resource management.... Well, a girl can dream!

It's a good point. I guess it depends on if you're looking for a community of fellow authors, markets or just a friendly, understanding shoulder to cry on. I'm pretty mercenary, myself, looking for sites that might somehow lead to contact with an agent, a publisher I was previously unaware of, etc.

My blog features practical advice and anecdotes from "the writing life" culled from over 20 years of professional scribbling. Most of what I have to say is pretty depressing so if you've got a weak disposition better give it a miss. Otherwise (of course) you're welcome to pop by...

True, but writers should also be voracious readers as well, as advised by Stephen King. At least in reading, the writer can observe what works, and more importantly what doesn't work...
